China to Dominate Upcoming Oil and Gas Projects Commencing Operations in Asia-Pacific by 2027

China is poised to dominate the landscape of the upcoming oil and gas (O&G) project in Asia-Pacific, accounting for 33% of the total projects anticipated to go into operation by 2027, reported Offshore Technology, which cited “Petrochemicals New Build and Expansion Projects Analysis by Type, Development Stage, Key Countries, Region and Forecasts, 2023-2027.”

Upcoming Oil & Gas Projects in Asia-Pacific Region

The O&G industry in the Asia-pacific region is forecasted to see a boom in the coming years, with the region’s economy resuming growth and driving demand for consumer goods and fuels.

Roughly 2,040 oil and gas projects are set to start operation during the forecast period of 2023–27, with petrochemical leading with 1,024 projects. Of the project total, 230 are expected to be upstream, 564 downstream, and 343 refinery projects.

The trunk/transmission pipelines sector accounts for 37% of all projects whilst LNG and oil storage respectively constitute 30% and 24% of the midstream project segment.

Among these 2,040 oil and gas projects, the construction of about 43% is underway and are expected to be in operation by 2027.

Thirty-one percent of the undertakings have been sanctioned by the governing authority or waiting for approval while the remaining projects are still in the planning phase.

China Leading the Oil & Gas Industry in Asia-Pacific

GlobalData forecasts China to lead the midstream projects. Around 89 midstream projects accounting for 22% of the total midstream projects in Asia-Pacific are anticipated to start operation between 2023 and 2027.

Liquefied natural gas (LNG) regasification projects top the list of midstream projects accounting for 46% of the total as the country steps up imports of natural gas as part of its effort to curb carbon emissions.

Himani Pant Pandey, Oil & Gas Analyst at GlobalData, comments: “Being one of the leading importers and consumers of oil and gas in the world, China is witnessing a strong midstream infrastructure development, particularly in the LNG regasification, pipelines, and storage segments.”

Again, China is forecast to dominate the petrochemical projects accounting for about half of the total projects commencing operation in Asia through 2027.

Out of 410 petrochemical projects starting in the country, the number of polypropylene and propylene projects are expected to be 48 and 42 respectively.

Optimising Oil & Gas Production Requires Efficient Reservoir Lifecycle Monitoring

With the demand for energy soaring worldwide, companies are striving to develop new oil and gas fields.

Case in point: New-built projects make up more than 78% of the total O&G projects starting in Asia-Pacific during the forecast period of 2023-27.

For oil and gas companies looking to optimise production and strengthen their decision-making, using high-resolution borehole seismic services manufactured by leading companies like Silixa is a sensible business investment.

High-end DAS seismic services can offer a cost-effective solution for monitoring the life cycle of a reservoir, including exploration, development, production, and abandonment.

Wrapping Up

By rolling out a significant number of oil and gas projects, China is committed to meeting the growing industrial, domestic, and consumer energy demand while also becoming self-sufficient in energy.

Fujitsu Devising Plans to Migrate to a One SAP ERP System based on SAP S/4HANA

Fujitsu, the leading Japanese global information and communication technology company, is reportedly strengthening its coalition with SAP to migrate all its ERP systems to SAP S4/HANA within five years.

“Our goal with the initiative is to organise and integrate them all at once to standardise and streamline operations in a holistic manner,” stated Shunsuke Baba, the CDPO (Chief Data & Process Officer) at Fujitsu.

Named OneERP+, this plan is devised to deploy one single standardised ERP across its operations globally while enabling Fujitsu to transform digitally, at a repositioning cost of about $760 million, reported The Registered.

More Insights

OneERP+ is expected to recruit more than 1,500 staffers during the peak of the project deployment in addition to the company’s 124,200 existing employees.

As the brainchild of CEO Takahito Tokitaive, this five-year-long digital transformation project is being led by Fujitsu’s EVP and chief data and process officer Shunsuke Baba.

Rolled out in the second half of 2020, this multi-year DX project is aimed at building “a foundation to support purpose-driven and data-driven management.”

This Japanese computing veteran currently operates more than 4,000 systems to run its internal business, multiple instances of SAP-based systems, and in-house ERPs.

“The program was started in the second half of 2020 in order to build a foundation to support purpose-driven and data-driven management, which represents a core measure in this strategic shift,” stated Shunsuke Baba. “There are many different business processes and systems for each business and region. One of our key challenges is how to thoroughly standardise all business process data and simplify it as a basic system.”

Migrating to One SAP ERP

The OneERP+ program is launched as part of Fujitsu’s effort to efficiently oversee and streamline its key global business operations, such as accounting, sales, project management and procurement, and more.

With this move, the technology giant is committed to efficiently consolidating its existing ERP services onto the S/4HANA cloud platform hosted in Microsoft Azure.

The company’s SaaS-based front-end applications are planned to be running in Azure with other SAP systems hosted by AWS.

The first stage of the migration process is poised to be completed within the 2024 fiscal year.

Successful Transition to the S/4HANA Platform Needs Expert Support

Cloud-based system deployment is gaining momentum among SAP-centric companies looking to drive business agility.

In addition, with SAP ECC mainstream support ending by 2027, migrating to the S/4HANA system has become unavoidable for future-focused businesses. However, assimilating a new system is a complex task that is subject to hefty costs, heavy customisation, and large-scale data migration. As a result, the process may lead to bottom-up disruption unless executed by experts.

For businesses looking to drive down the migration cost while also ensuring minimum business disruption, investing in a high-quality SAP migration service like Protera is a sensible decision.

A high-end service can accelerate the S/4HANA transformation project efficiently and cost-effectively.

Shedding light on the intricacy of this five-year-long OneERP+ project, The EVP and CDPO officer at Fujitsu said, “This is a very challenging project, and although it is actually promoted with the inclusion of add-on development, it is not merely an ERP introduction project but is also promoted as a large-scale reform project at the management level on the premise of a large-scale transformation of business processes,” explained Baba. “The organisation consists of a team that designs business transformation from a business perspective and a team that implements it as an IT system.”

GoodFuels and Hyundai GLOVIS Partner on Biofuel Bunkering for the First Korean-Flagged PCTC Vessel

GoodFuels, in collaboration with Hyundai GLOVIS, have announced the successful completion of the first biofuel bunkering with a South Korea-flagged pure car and truck carrier (PCTC).

Named GLOVIS SUNRISE, this vehicle carrier is the first-ever Korean-flagged PCTC to sail on biofuels.

GoodFuels considers this bio-bunkering a milestone, as promoting the usability of sustainable “drop-in” fuel takes centre stage in the company’s sustainability strategy.

“This first bio-bunkering in collaboration with Hyundai GLOVIS marks an exciting milestone towards decarbonised maritime transport and more sustainable supply chains,’ stated Dirk Kronemeijer, CEO of GoodFuels. “It also shows the central role that biofuels can play in reducing shipping’s carbon footprint today as a safe, convenient, and technically viable option to slash emissions from commercial vessels by up to 90%.”

Sustainable Marine Fuel can Curb CO2 Emissions

Even though vital for trade, the shipping sector contributes significantly to climate change. This sector alone requires over 330 Mt of fuel in a year and spews out 2-3% of the world’s total CO2 emissions.

In 2021, waterborne transport accounted for around 3% to 4% of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in the European Union (EU).

With the maritime industry responsible for carrying roughly 90% of world trade, decarbonising this sector has long been considered a dire necessity.

That said, years after sustainable marine fuels were first introduced as an alternative to petroleum-based fuel in the shipping industry, uptake remains remarkably limited.

However, steps are being taken to curb greenhouse gas emissions from the shipping industry.

For example, In March 2023, a ‘groundbreaking’ agreement has been inked between the European Parliament and the Council to help the maritime industry reduce ship emissions by 2% as of 2025 and 80% as of 2050.

Experts unanimously agree that biofuels hold the potential to provide almost the same efficiency as fossil-based marine fuel but with a much smaller carbon footprint. For example, sustainable marine fuel can offer more than 70% reduction in well-to-wake GHG emissions than its fossil fuel equivalent, based on the feedstock and conversion process used.

However, with the increasing bio-content in sustainable marine fuels exacerbating microbial contamination, preventing the growth of microbes has now become dire.

Businesses looking to improve their fuel management use periodic marine fuel tests with kits like FUELSTAT®, so that that contamination can be identified at the earliest stages and before any safety/operational disruptions incur hefty losses.

More About the First Korean-Flagged Bio-Bunkering

During its port visit to Vlissingen (Flushing) in the Netherlands on 28th December, vehicle carrier GLOVIS SUNRISE was reported to be refuelled with 50 Mt of 30% sustainable biofuel blend produced by GoodFuels.

The trial was executed during the PCTC’s journey between Europe and the Persian Gulf, which was successfully concluded this January.

According to GoodFuel, the sustainable marine fuel that powered GLOVIS SUNRISE was 100% waste and residue-based and met the highest sustainability requirements.

This marine fuel supplied by GoodFuel is claimed to provide 80% to 90% well-to-exhaust CO2 reduction compared to its petroleum-based fuel equivalent.

Due to the drop-in properties of the biofuel, it required no changes in the fuel tank or engine to power the PCTC.

Hyundai GLOVIS expects this partnership will offer the company solid footing for significantly decoupling GHG emissions from its fleet of 153 vessels while also fostering its capabilities for eco-friendly green logistics.

Headquartered in Seoul, Hyundai Glovis is a global logistics company that offers businesses optimal strategic services. The company is committed to continuously evolving and delivering greater sustainability across its logistics and shipping activities.

George Verwer, founder of Operation Mobilization, passes away aged 84

The death has been announced of George Verwer, who founded the global Christian mission agency, Operation Mobilization, and directed it for 45 years.

He passed away peacefully with his family by his side at his home near London, England, on the evening of Friday, April 14th. He was 84 years old.

George was born in New Jersey, USA, and committed his life to Christ at a Billy Graham meeting in New York City in 1955. Driven by the cause of world evangelism from then on, the teenage maverick went on to have immeasurable global impact. He has been described as “the most outstanding North American missionary statesman of the last 60 years.”1

George changed the face of missions in his generation,” said Andrew Scott, President of OM in the USA. “When the mission agencies of the late fifties were looking for highly trained individuals with seminary degrees who would commit to going for a lifetime, George invited young people who simply loved Jesus to come for a summer. This was new. This was different. Thousands came.”

Operation Mobilization began with three students in a worn-out van distributing Christian literature in Mexico, then branching into Europe and across the globe. Today, more than 3,000 OM workers are active in almost 150 countries, in a huge range of ministries. George’s daring vision in the 1960s led to ships being used to transport and train international volunteers while carrying a cargo of literature and aid supplies. Fifty million people have climbed the gangways of OM’s four ships, and at least double that number have come into contact with the Good News through outreaches and projects in port cities worldwide.

Movements like OM and its close contemporary, Youth With A Mission (YWAM), led the way in developing same- and near-culture workers to serve globally alongside those from established mission-sending nations and backgrounds.

OM’s International Director, Lawrence Tong, said, “George was passionate about Jesus, passionate for God’s Word and passionate for the lost. I believe he was God’s man for the 20th century, who changed the course of modern mission.”

He demonstrated a lifestyle of radical discipleship. “George’s legacy is that of a life-size example of a truly committed Jesus-follower,” said Akira Mori, a ministry pastor in Japan. “George had a God-given ability to inspire and exhort and challenge – but to me, the person was the example, the message and the challenge; much more than what he said.”

“George truly practised what he preached,” said Matthew Skirton, Field Leader of OM in the UK. “His authenticity and passion for reaching the lost, but also his humility and transparency when sharing about his struggles, have profoundly impacted me – and I know have touched, encouraged and challenged so many others.

Known for his world map jackets and for handing out more than a million free books, in the twenty years since he stepped down from leading OM, George managed special projects, spoke at church events with characteristic vigour and wrote more than a dozen books. A key theme was admitting his own imperfections and honouring God who graciously forgives and works through people, despite their mistakes. He called it ‘messiology.’

Lawrence Tong recalls, “many people, myself included, were baffled at the invention of the word. I realize more and more the truth and wisdom of what he packed into that one word alone. As usual, George the trailblazer was way ahead of us in his spiritual life, in his thinking, in his vision, and in his interpretation of trends. There will never be another GV.”

Joshua Bautista, OM Canada’s Executive Director said, “George was not only a man of immeasurable influence and impact on modern Missions, but he was a faithful man of God whose sole desire was to love his Lord and help others enter into the same loving relationship with Jesus.”

George is survived by his wife, Drena, their three children, plus grandchildren and great-grandchildren. The Verwer family thanks partners all over the world for their prayers and asks for privacy at this time. Details of a local Canadian Celebration of Life service will be released later. See our website for details: www.om.org/ca. Also, a tribute video has been created which can be seen here.

Speaking in 2015, George summed up what drove him, long past retirement age:

“I’m still mega-motivated to see everyone in the world being given the gospel at least once… [to] have the opportunity to hear about saving grace through our Lord Jesus Christ, and I hope I can, right to my last breath, continue to share that message.”

About Operation Mobilization:

Operation Mobilization’s work began when George Verwer, Dale Rhoton, and Walter Borchard embarked on their first mission trip in 1957. Their passion to share God’s Word with those who had not yet heard the gospel or encountered followers of Jesus led to a global organization of upwards of 3,000 people, now at work in more than 147 countries. Millions have been shown the love of Christ, tens of thousands of Christians who served short-term have been discipled and prepared for future service, and countless lives have been transformed by God. An estimated 300 other organizations worldwide have their roots in OM or have been started by former OMers.

“We are committed to seeing a vibrant community of Jesus followers within reach of every person in the world.” – OM in Canada’s mission statement
